The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a new numbering format for fixed-line telephone numbers. This change involves increasing the number of digits in fixed-line numbers from eight to ten by adding the prefix “02” before the existing fixed numbers.
According to a statement by the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, existing fixed-line numbers will continue to operate alongside the new format until December 31, 2023. Starting from January 1, 2024, the new numbering format, beginning with the “02” prefix, will become the standard.
This means that both old and new numbering formats will coexist for a transitional period, allowing users to adapt to the change gradually. After December 31, 2023, the new format will be the primary way to dial fixed-line numbers in Nigeria.

To illustrate this change, if you had a fixed-line number like “09461700,” you would need to dial it as “02094617000” in the new numbering format. Similarly, existing fixed-line numbers in major cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano, such as “014630643,” “094630643,” “084460643,” and “064460643,” will become “02014630643,” “02094630643,” “02084460643,” and “02064460643,” respectively.
It’s important to note that this change only applies to fixed telephone numbers. There is no alteration to the existing mobile numbering format. As of July 2023, Nigeria had approximately 96,771 fixed wireless and fixed wired (landline) telephone lines, as reported by the NCC.
